Aquatic Programs

Water Exercise Classes

Harbison Recreation offers 4 different levels of Water Exercise for the Residents, members and the general public. Participants must be 16 years of age or older.  The classes are taught according to guidelines set by national organizations such as Aquatic Exercise Association and The Arthritis Foundation.

Aquacise I & II
These are low impact, moderate to intermediate intensity exercise classes.  Instructors are certified through AEA or another group aerobics organization. Aquacise I is offered Monday - Friday 9:30am to 10:30am. Aquacise II is offered Monday -Friday 10:45am to 11:45 am. These classes include cardio-vascular work-out, weight training, noodle workouts, water walking, and stretching exercises.

Aquatic Arthritis Exercise
This is a low impact, low intensity exercise class.  Instructors are certified through The Arthritis Foundation or a comparable organization.  This class is designed for individuals with Arthritis and other joint or mobility injuries or difficulties.  The class consists of range of motion and stretching exercises only.  There is no weight training or cardiovascular workouts involved.  The class is offered Monday-Friday 12:00pm-1:00pm.  

Water Aerobics
This is a low impact, high intensity exercise class for adult participants 16 years of age and older.  Instructors are certified through AEA or another group aerobics organization.   This class is offered in the evenings Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 6:15pm-7:00pm and Saturday mornings 10:30am-11:30am.

    • Classes are taught by American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors.
    • Each two week session consists of eight classes.
    • Classes are held Monday – Thursday.  Fridays are reserved in the event that we must reschedule a class due to closure of the pool.
    • There are no refunds for swim lessons unless a medical emergency occurs and a written excuse from a medical professional is provided or 10 days notice prior to class session.

    Adult Swimming Lessons: Beginner-Intermediate

    American Red Cross Class Levels & Descriptions:

    Parent - Tot (w/ Parent):
    Recommended Ages: 6 months – 3 yrs. of age, a parent/child class which helps to introduce children to the water through a variety of games and songs. Parents will learn different techniques, which can be applied outside of the class. A responsible adult must accompany the child in the water during all class sessions.

    Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills:
    Purpose: Helps students feel comfortable in the water. Participants learn to enter and exit water safely, float on front and back, open eyes under water, and submerge to pick up object. Submerge mouth, nose and eyes. Explore arm and hand movements, exhale under water. Explore swimming on front and back. Use a life jacket. Follow basic water safety rules.

    Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills:
    Purpose: Gives students success with fundamental skills. Participants will learn how to tread water, glide on front and back, float on front and back, explore swimming on side, role over from front to back, back to front, enter water by stepping or jumping from the side, open eyes under water, submerge head to retrieve objects, swim on front and back using combined strokes. Move in water while wearing life jacket and perform rhythmic breathing.

    Level 3 Stroke Development:
    Purpose: Build on the skills of Level 2 through additional guided practice. Participants learn to jump in to deep water from the side, perform rotary breathing, perform butterfly kick and body motion, and change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back. Dive from sitting or kneeling position, survival float, submerge fully and retrieve object, swim front crawl, bob with head fully submerged, swim back crawl.

    Level 4 Stroke Improvement:
    Purpose: Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills such as the front and back crawl, dive from compact or stride position, swim breast stroke, tread water using sculling arm motions and kick, swim underwater, swim elementary backstroke, use safe diving rules, perform feet-first surface dive, swim on side using scissor kick, coordinate butterfly and performs open turns on front and back.

    Adult Lessons:
    This class is for adults who don’t have any prior formal swimming experience. Participants will learn the fundamentals of different strokes & will be taught at their own pace.
